DIY Portable Winch Plate: Convert a 12V Winch to Portable Cordless Power
If you’ve ever had to yank a dead project car into the shop, drag equipment onto a trailer, or stretch fence wire out in the field, you know the pain. Fighting 100 feet of heavy extension cord or messing with jumper cables and a dying car battery just for a quick pull sucks.
We got tired of clunky setups around the shop and wanted a simple fix: grab a standard 2,500 lb utility winch, clip on a tool battery from the workbench, and get to work anywhere.
What Is a Portable Winch Mounting Plate?
No thin sheet metal or cheap plastic here. We take 3/16" American steel, notch it, precision-bend it, and pre-drill the mounting pattern right here in South Salt Lake. It’s built to take a beating, throw in the truck bed, and last.
We offer a couple of options depending on your build:
The Full Kit (Compatible with Milwaukee® 18V or DeWalt® 20V): Comes pre-wired with a battery adapter plug, a 30-amp inline fuse, crimp connectors, and stainless hardware to bolt your controller down.
The Bare Winch Plate: Built for fabricators and DIYers who already have a battery adapter sitting around and just need a rock-solid steel mounting bracket.
DIY Winch Plate Requirements & Fitment Specs
Look, we’re fabricators, so we’ll give it to you straight. This is a real DIY project. You’ll need a few parts on your end to finish the build:
A Standard 2,500 lb Utility Winch: Pre-drilled for the standard 2-hole 3.10" (78.5 mm) center-to-center mounting pattern. This matches most budget utility winches (like discount tool store SKU 56258).
Synthetic Winch Rope (3/16"): You’ll need to strip off the factory steel cable, backing plate, and roller fairlead to run this setup safely.
Power Tool Battery & Shop Tools: Grab your favorite tool battery, wire strippers, crimpers, wrenches, and an angle grinder.
Important Safety & Wiring Tips for Battery-Powered Winches
Hooking an 18V or 20V lithium-ion tool battery up to a 12V winch gives you serious line speed and pulling power in a package you can carry with one hand.
A couple of things to keep in mind before you start pulling:
No Low-Voltage Cutoff: Power tool battery adapters deliver raw power directly. Keep an eye on your battery levels so you don't run the pack completely flat and damage the cells.
Horizontal Pulls Only: This plate is designed strictly for recovery and horizontal pulling. Never use this setup as an overhead hoist.
